The Healing Power of Music at Funerals

When it comes to celebrating the life of a loved one, music has the wonderful ability to evoke emotions and memories. Whilst traditional funeral hymns may be close to your heart, it's crucial to consider the preferences of the deceased and their loved ones, ensuring that the music reflects their spirit and values. The inclusion of popular music choices can add a unique touch to the celebration of life, and in today’s secular society are a good alternative.

Popular music has the power to connect mourners with the deceased on a personal level. Whether it's a favorite song that reminds us of shared moments or a tune that reflects their personality, these choices can bring comfort and solace during a difficult time.

Have you thought about what music you'd have at your funeral? I have, and weirdly, the subject seems to pop up with friends on a regular basis - possibly I'm the common denominator there!

Music is incredibly emotive, I'm sure we could all sit through the weepiest weepy without crying if the music track was taken away. So, what would you go for at your Celebration of Life ceremony? Upbeat and contemporary - your favourite dance-along-to tune? Or a bit more melancholic, something to pull at the heartstrings?

There are some top favourites played at funerals, such as Monty Python's 'Always look on the bright side of life' from The Life of Brian or 'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Williams but it really does boil down to personal choice.

M's ceremony kicked off with ‘Breathing Lightning’ by Anthrax. Yeah, it's really heavy, but the lyrics are amazing - and were perfect for M.

If a ceremony includes a period of reflection and my clients are struggling with their music choices, one of my favourite pieces is 'Sunset' by Paul Mottram. I first heard this on BBC radio 2 after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it's such a beautiful piece of music, it encourages sitting and remembering.

And more recently, I was at the 'Elvis Live on Screen with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra' and heard 'Memories'. Not an Elvis song I'd come across before, but it would work perfectly alongside a photo montage.

The music choices at a celebration of life or funeral ceremony are so individual. What did your loved one enjoy listening to? Or what song have you heard recently that reminds you of them? It might be a new release that they would not have heard, but it speaks to you - about them - such as Pink's 'When I Get There'

Ultimately, the power of music lies in its ability to heal, unite, and celebrate life. By carefully selecting popular music choices, we can create a funeral experience that not only pays tribute to the departed but also provides solace and comfort to those left behind.

Incorporating popular music into a funeral service is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of a loved one, allowing their memory to live on through the melodies that touched their heart.

And, if you're wondering, the final track I would choose for my celebration of life would be

Kylie's 'Dancing'
